NZ Charity Sector Survey 2024 - Key Findings

NZ Charity Sector Survey 2024 - Key Findings

Fundraising Talent Recruitment, Maitland and Associates, and FINZ are proud to present a charity sector survey, the data was collected late 2024 and the report released in December 2024. We know how important it is to have detailed and up-to-date data on the sector, and it's only possible with participation of our brilliant fundraisers.

Here are some of the highlights of the report:

High Turnover Reveals Sector Challenges

Perhaps most striking is that over 53% of fundraisers have been in their current roles for two years or less – equivalent to losing half your team every two years. When asked what they'd prioritize for a new role, 25% said higher salary, 22% cited workplace culture, and 16% wanted better career progression.

Nearly 20% of respondents are general fundraisers, with 28% juggling 11 or more fundraising tasks, suggesting these professionals are spread extremely thin across what we sometimes call "unicorn roles."

The Numbers Tell a Story

The median salary reported was $92,500, showing a substantial rise over recent years. However, many fundraisers expressed dissatisfaction with their compensation, with one respondent noting: "As a sector, we should demand higher salaries, we are being underpaid."
The highest salaries were recorded in health, disability and international development charities, with nearly one-third of respondents working for health charities specifically.

Looking Forward

While the sector faces significant challenges around salary equity and resource constraints, it's clear that fundraisers remain passionate about their work and eager for positive change.

Post-COVID funding challenges are real, but so is the commitment of our fundraising community. We plan to conduct this survey every two years to track progress and support our sector's growth.
